Developing Essential Job and Social Skills for Adults with Disabilities
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly three-fourths of people with disabilities were not part of the workforce in 2023. At Friendship Circle of Wisconsin, we are working to change this with our 12-month employment training program for adults with disabilities. Our program helps participants develop the critical job and social skills they need to find fulfilling employment and succeed in the workplace.

This inclusive vocational training is designed for adults with disabilities, aged 18 and older. Trainees learn in a small, supportive environment where they gain self-esteem, enhance independence, learn essential skills and build lasting friendships.

How Our Employment Training Program Works
Our inclusive job training program accommodates various disabilities and learning styles to provide practical, hands-on training. Together, we focus on:

Training with Purpose: A Simulated Work Environment
Friendship Circle’s employment training for adults with disabilities follows each trainee’s journey for a year, allowing us to get to know everyone personally. Through our individualized approach, we develop and assess personalized goals on a weekly basis, ensuring each trainee receives the support they need.

Our training happens at our Fox Point location, where we also operate a bakery and café that provides real-world job experience. The items made during class are packaged, priced, and sold at our café, giving trainees hands-on experience in a real work setting.

Upon completion of our program, graduates receive a professional resume and a custom cover letter tailored to their strengths, abilities, and interests, ensuring they’re well-prepared for job placement. Through our network of 50+ local businesses, we connect our graduates to inclusive employment opportunities across industries such as education, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, retail, and more.

But it doesn’t end there. Our trainers continue to provide support as graduates transition into their new roles, ensuring a smooth and successful integration into the workforce.

  • Q: Why should someone participate in this program?
    A: Our Employment Training Program is dedicated to helping adults with disabilities become productive members of society and build meaningful relationships at work. Work is one of the key places where people form lasting friendships and gain independence.
  • Q: Can participants work with other job coaches during the program?
    A: Absolutely! Our vocational training enhances the support provided by other job coaches, whether they’re from DVR  (Division of Vocational Rehabilitation) or another organization. We encourage participants to take advantage of both our program and their other coaching services to maximize their chances of finding their ideal job.
  • Q: How often is the Employment Training Program offered?
    A: We offer four different cohorts throughout the year, with a maximum of 16 students at any given time. Because space is limited, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible to get the conversation started.
  • Q: What financial support options are available?
    A: We accept funding through IRIS, Community Care, and My Choice Wisconsin Family Care, which is provided by Molina Healthcare .
  • Q: Are participants trained to cook and work in restaurants?
    A: While cooking and baking are part of our training, the focus is not on culinary arts. Instead, we use food preparation to teach job skills, such as following instructions, attention to detail, teamwork and time management.
